Please join your colleagues to discuss architectural issues on your mind. The format of this session will be an unconference.

Embedded Architects: Managing secrets for systems
Thursday, June 13, 2019, 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. PDT

Many teams use a password manager, such as UW-IT's LastPass service, to manage secrets for desktop applications and even for systems.

As IT teams mature their DevOps practices and increase automation of their software environments, there is a demand for secrets management tools and services, such as Hashicorp Vault. These tools promote security practices such as key rotation through automated provisioning of short-lived, dynamic secrets.

This session will review existing key management practices and tools, gauge our organizational interest and readiness to pursue a centrally-managed key service, and consider the model for a new service.

Abel Wang on DevOps (hosted by Agile CoP)
Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2020, 12 – 1 p.m. PDT

The Agile CoP is excited to have Abel Wang, Principal Cloud Advocate and DevOps Lead at Microsoft, join us. Please share to those you feel that may be interested. Abel will be available for questions after his presentation.

Microsoft DevOps is the union of people, process, and products that facilitates continuous delivery of value to our users. This is vital in today’s world, but it’s not easy to do. See how Microsoft made their DevOps journey. Going from a waterfall process delivering new software once every three years to now delivering new features every three weeks with multiple bug fixes daily. This has not been easy or pain free. Come see the lessons learned from all the painful mistakes made by Microsoft when they embarked on their DevOps Journey and the changes they have made to embrace DevOps.

You will learn: • What is DevOps? Why is it important? • What was Microsoft’s DevOps journey? • Best practices for DevOps

Abel Wang is a Principal Cloud Advocate and DevOps Lead specializing in DevOps and Azure with a background in application development. He is currently part of Donovan Brown’s League of Extraordinary Cloud DevOps Advocates. Before joining Microsoft, Abel spent seven years as a Process Consultant and a Certified Scrum Master helping customers globally develop solutions using agile practices and Team Foundation Server. Prior to that, Abel founded and sold his own software company. When not working, Abel is either writing code (yes, that’s what he does for fun), playing his guitar or training for The Great Wall Marathon. His Twitter account is @AbelSquidHead.

Embedded Architects: (Jupyter) Notebooks for administrative IT
Thursday, Nov. 18, 2021, 10:30 – 11:50 a.m. PST

Please join us for a session on using (Jupyter) notebooks as interactive troubleshooting guides and runbooks.

Tho Le, Senior System Engineer in UW-IT, will share demos and stories of how notebooks can be used in an operational environment or a developer environment.

Technical documentation is hard work. Bad documentation leads to incorrect work, increases stress, and slows down the onboarding process for new engineers/developers.

(Juypter) notebooks can empower your team and reduce toil through the use of interactive troubleshooting guides and runbooks. You can easily share code and get feedback from your customers/colleagues.

  • Pick a language you want to work in (SQL, Python, PowerShell, R, PySpark, to name a few)
  • Notebook demo: Troubleshooting Guide (TSG) for the on-call developer/engineer
  • Notebook demo: Onboarding new developer/engineer
  • Notebook demo: Setting up a new environment through the use of Runbooks

Containers Revisited, 4 years on
Thursday, Feb. 17, 2022, 10:30 – 11:50 a.m. PST

Various teams at the UW began an investment in containers and Kubernetes in early 2018.

Since then, Kubernetes has proved its value and established itself as the dominant orchestration technology upon which Cloud vendors have built container services.

Most Cloud vendors now also provide serverless offerings for functions and single container instances.
With short updates from several teams, we look at where that investment is paying and where it isn’t, and what’s next.

Speakers:
  • Ryan Becker, Office of Research Information Systems (ORIS)
  • Thomas Thorogood, Identity and Access Management (UW-IT IAM)
  • Evan Silberman, Infrastructure Software Tools (UW-IT IST)

[Rescheduled from 6/16; please note the time change]

Topic: Data Mesh.

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been an increasing reference to Data Mesh architectures that purport to enable more effective data analytics at scale in complex organizations.

Cloud vendors of data and analytics platforms have started offering Data Mesh solutions through new products and services.

In this session, we will take a high-level look at what a Data Mesh architecture is, the problem it addresses, the emerging vendor products that offer to enable that architecture, and then we will discuss how all that maps to the University of Washington data and analytics environment.

This will be a high-level discussion by people are who are not experts in Data Mesh, but have a stake or interest in this space. If you are an expert or know an expert, please let me know.

Seeking a Single UW Person Identity
Thursday, Mar. 23, 2023, 11 – 11:50 a.m. PDT

The UW has processes that reconcile and resolve identity records from multiple systems.

These processes help to ensure that UW persons (student, faculty, staff, donor, and other affiliations) have easier and more satisfying experiences at the University. They also ensure that the information managed by the University is accurate, secure, and appropriately private.

This session will provide a high level review of existing identity matching processes, challenges with those processes, and opportunities for improvements. Those opportunities will be considered for further study.

Presenters will share perspectives from multiple UW organizations.
