Overview
Two different plugins offer the ability to track visits to your blog. Both require activating an account on a 3rd party server. Jetpack is tightly integrated with WordPress and is easier to set up, while Google Analytics is more powerful.
Option One: Google Analytics
Google Analytics is an extremely popular web usage statistics system located at http://google.com/analytics
If you don't already have a Google Analytics account set up, go to http://google.com/analytics and set one up. A UW NetID via our Google Apps for Education service can be used to setup the Google Analytics accounts. If you don't have an active GA account, you won't be able to get past step #5.
To activate Google Analytics for your blog, follow these instructions:
- Log into your dashboard.
- Click on "Plugins" and then "Installed Plugins."
- Activate "Google Analyticator"
- Once activated, click on "Settings" and then "Google Analytics"
- Follow the instructions on the plugin configuration page. At the very minimum, you will want to "Authenticate with Google."
- That should be it! Visit google.com/analytics the following day to make sure data is successfully being reported.
Option Two: WordPress.com Stats via Jetpack
- Log into your dashboard.
- Click on "Plugins" and then "Installed Plugins."
- Activate "Jetpack by WordPress.com"
- Click on connect to "WordPress.com"
- If you have a WordPress.com account already: log in. If you don't have an account, click on "Need an Account?"
- Once authorized, you should see a "Jetpack" administrative menu and "site stats."
- That should be it!
